Before sending this out for people to see, we discussed whether we should have Philippe do subtitles or not and ultimately we decided that the film is funnier if you are not entirely certain what the doctor is saying. It adds to the nightmarish quality of the scenario and has the odd quality of being like the way that adults talk in the Charlie Brown cartoons.
Also, much to Philippe’s surprise, some of those who have seen it (like me) have built up elaborate back-stories for the female character – that she’s an Anglo from Toronto with only a rudimentary understanding of French who has come to Montreal to go to university and is visiting this Doctor for the first time because she can’t wait until she gets back to Ontario to see her regular English Doctor.
