In 1989, Vanilla Ice's song 'Ice Ice Baby' which he originally wrote when he was 16, had became a major radio hit after accidentally being played instead of Ice's first recorded single 'Play That Funky Music'.
After getting heavy airplays on The Box, Tommy Quon, Ice's manager, financed the music video for $ 8,000, shooting most of it in an abandoned warehouse and on the roof of his club, City Lights where Vanilla Ice originally performed nightly. The music video features Ice as well as the Vanilla Ice Posse, which consisted of Hi-Tec (Jay Huffman), E-Rock (Everett Fitzgerald), and Juice (Marc Grinage). Ice's disc jockeys D-Shay and Earthquake also make an appearence as well as Ice's childhood friend Squirrel and Tommy Quon's daughter.
The music video and song was something made purely out love. Tommy Quon had met Ice when he first started coming to City Lights simply as an audience member, getting in with a fake ID. Tommy sensed that there was a star quality in Ice after performing on a dare by his friend Squirrel during an open mic at the club.
The song was written by Ice and Earthquake (Floyd Brown) who came up with the name and verse 'Ice, Ice, Baby'. Going through his brother's record collection, Ice found 'Under Pressure' and the hook was sampled for "Ice Ice Baby" which many believed contributed to the song's popularity, despite "Ice Ice Baby" surpassing Under Pressure's popularity almost tenfold during it's release. « less
