  • eh, this was disturbing in a way that wasn't particularly redeeming. there's the not so subtle suggestion of adult-child sex - which i guess is okay because the child happens to male and the woman a sex worker.... if a seemingly precocious 16 year old girl was sleeping with 29 year old male prostitute, it'd be just as funny. also, there is an inter-racial/respectability colourism politic behind elise "slapping the black off" a half-black hooker (melyssa ford). aside from black women being stereotyped as sex workers, black women who date older white men are often seen as using sex and exoticism for social climbing. the slap differentiates these two sex-striver stereotypes by putting the mother in the position of moral superiority and racial authenticity. but visual narrative we are left with is one black woman assaulting another of money and disrespect while "the man" watches on bemused. we've seen this before, no? aside from wtf?! value, it is odd that anyone would find a simplistic reshuffling of stereotypes truly funny. but then again a lot black folks seem to think that a cross-dressing black guy in fat suit is gut splitting hilarity.so yay, for progress.
