Someone studied conserv. and lib. reactions to the Colbert show and found conservs typically laughed & actually thought he was making fun of liberals. Part of his brilliance on the show is that you have to be smart in order to see the satire and most conservatives just glaze over during the biting multi-dimensional satire and wait for the scatological jokes and the pseudomachismo that they find so engaging. In fact most conservative TV-watchers probably just watch it because the studio audience convinces them they should find it funny. But in this scene, the audience laughter isn't getting picked up on the mic, so conservatives were just sort of appalled and bewildered. Like the guy below who says "I don't see why this is funny, he's just annoying."

he was as cutting and satirical as hes ever been, and the guys are just sitting four feet away, bush with an oblivious shit-eating grin on his face. hes our national court jester. it just doesnt make you laugh too much because hes pointing out long-term tragic uses of power with his jokes, rather than a single funny soundbit as he does on his everyday show... more >

He took huge swings without a lot of them even realizing it.
