"In the Old Days, every Butch had a penis...
It means... I have 4 or 5!" - Lea DeLaria
In-your-face chronicles of lesbian star Lea DeLaria. This is a clip from "The Butch", a documentary filmed at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater and in and around New York City.
Lea DeLaria is generally known as the first "openly gay" comic to appear on national television, with appearances on The Arsenio Hall Show and Comedy Central's all-gay special, Out There, which she hosted. The summer of 1997 brought her national attention and critical acclaim in her breakout role as Hildy in (On the Town) for the (Shakespeare-in-the-Park Festival). Now her one-woman show, (It's Delightful, It's Delicious, It's DeLaria), has played to sold-out houses in major venues across the country. Lea has been a featured guest on: The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The Today Show, ABC Late Night, Chef Du Jour and (Politically Incorrect). She has created "strange characters" for: One Life To Live, Will and Grace (Nurse Carver - Swimming From Cambodia 2003), Friends (The One With The Lesbian Wedding), The John Larroquette Show, Fat Rose and Squeaky, The Job (Kiki), "Further Tales of the City"(Willie Omiak), Pulp Fiction (Mr. Purple) and Matlock (Detective Pat Jordan). She is "the voice of Helga" on the dark comedy cult hit, The Oblongs.
This stocky, cocky, loud-mouthed Italian lesbian stand up comic, musician, actor, singer and civil rights activist has been on Rolling Stone's "Hot List," been featured in magazine articles in: People / Time / Newsweek / Out Magazine /and Entertainment Weekly. She has appeared in several movies including: The First Wives' Club / Homo Heights / Edge of Seventeen / and in musicals, including: The Rocky Horror Picture Show and On the Town.
A native of Belleville, Illinois and a product of Catholic schooling ("mandatory training for stand-up comedy", she explains), Lea is not known for her demure demeanor. Her critically acclaimed performance in the New York Shakespeare Festival's revival of "On the Town" prompted the New York Times to dub her "an Ethel Merman with attitude."
An extremely prominent figure in the world of lesbian stand-up comedy, she is noted for her raunchy persona and inflammatory, irreverent political commentary, which have proven controversial inside and outside the gay and lesbian community. Some of her comedy releases include "Bulldyke in a China Shop" and "Box Lunch".
Lea's Book of Rules for the World by: Lea DeLaria, Maggie Cassella (Contributor). Rule #10: Learn all the rules...then break them
Lea DeLaria has been breaking rules all her life. Now she offers some of her own....
Cross Howard Stern with Sandra Bernhardt, add a one-two punch, and you have stand-up comic Lea DeLaria, who plays to rave reviews on and off the Broadway stage. Now, in this uproarious collection of essays, DeLaria shares her Modern Day Ten Commandments and X-Rated Rules for the World with anyone bold enough to read them.
Lea DeLaria, who already enjoyed a career as a Broadway singer and stand-up comedian, made her recording Warner Bros. debut in 2000. Hailed by the Times as "The Best Jazz Album of 2001", Play It Cool confirmed Lea as one of the best jazz singers of our time. Q magazine commented "Lea DeLaria is blessed with one of the most beautiful voices around", while Time Out claimed "the gal can certainly swing", and the Guardian summed her up as "talks like a coffee grinder, and sounds like a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and a Broadway diva."
Her second album, Double Standards, received rave reviews in the UK and US press, and from 'Call Me' and 'Philadelphia from this recording get regular radio play on both sides of the Atlantic. Lea's UK jazz live dates have included: the London Jazz Festival / Brighton's Komedia / and several sold-out residencies at Pizza Express, and Pizza On The Park. She has also appeared at: the New York City JVC / the Montreux Jazz Festival / and as the "featured vocalist" of /THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF (THE NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL) TOUR.
"This raunchy lesbian comic with a big mouth and an even bigger heart...keeps you laughing...." - The New Yorker
"Every inch a star." - The New York Times
On a more personal note, Lea DeLaria is Lou Costello!
I hope you enjoy the "clip".
