Description: Each year in Germany between 400 and 550 people fall victim to fires. Interestingly, in most cases the actual cause of death is not the blaze itself but smoke inhalation. Two minutes of exposure to thick smoke can result in such serious lung damage that oxygen no longer reaches vital organs in sufficient quantities. Now a new mobile heart-lung machine might help to save lives in situations like these.
