This is the infamous "Marijuana" sketch from the early 80s comedy program, FRIDAYS, in which Andy Kaufman appeared to get into an on-air brawl with the cast and crew, including Michael Richards.
i think that Andy Kaufman was a smart guy - he understood that comedy or "entertainment" are not all about sticking to the book and going by the rules . I think he wanted television viewers to experience something real . In a sense he was ahead of his time - i think he understood that most often than not reality can be the best entertainment of all.

This was a planned event, he did these types of things (southern bashing/wrestling women, the foreign man/latka) as amusement for himself and for anyone else who could figure out he was fooling people around him or viewing him. This is similar and probably inspirational to Sasha Baron Cohen aka Ali G/Borat/Bruno, except Sasha keeps the trickery on film as opposed to going beyond the film and to the audience or viewer, which is what Kaufman did. That is what makes Kaufman the ultimate genius in this comedic performance art.

Andy Kaufman was a genius, what you percieved as arogance was Andy Just having fun; somewhat like what Silent Jay was saying. Read Bob Zmuda's Book.
