This is the infamous "Marijuana" sketch from the early 80s comedy program, FRIDAYS, in which Andy Kaufman appeared to get into an on-air brawl with the cast and crew, including Michael Richards.
i think that Andy Kaufman was a smart guy - he understood that comedy or "entertainment" are not all about sticking to the book and going by the rules . I think he wanted television viewers to experience something real . In a sense he was ahead of his time - i think he understood that most often than not reality can be the best entertainment of all.
To StayClassy…..you are missing the point. This was a planned event, he did these types of things (southern bashing/wrestling women, the foreign man/latka) as amusement for himself and for anyone else who could figure out he was fooling people around him or viewing him. This is similar and probably inspirational to Sasha Baron Cohen aka Ali G/Borat/Bruno, except Sasha keeps the trickery on film as opposed to going beyond the film and to the audience or viewer, which is what Kaufman did. That is what makes Kaufman the ultimate genius in this comedic performance art.
Awww, I miss Andy. I searched for years for the lost “Bananas” episode in which he gets in a fight with Bob Zmuda on air in front of children. (supposedly what inspired the Jerry Springer show if you believe Bob Zmuda’s book) Who knows if it still exists.
You’re spot on Rich. Andy created art, and like most great art it was misunderstood (and generated ill feelings) in his time.

The clip is now famous and all the people who were invested in it can look at it and wonder if the show would have been picked up and made lots of money if only Andy didnt choose to make it all about himself. That really is funny. Maybe it was all the people wishing ill on Andy and the negativity he thrived on that gave him cancer. That would be funny too.

Man I was SO high when I watched this in 1979!
Andy Kaufman was a genius, what you percieved as arogance was Andy Just having fun; somewhat like what Silent Jay was saying. Read Bob Zmuda's Book.

Hahaha 05:52 Larry David!
LOVE Andy Kaufman!
Andy Kaufman was not a genius. He was just a guy who thought he was better than everyone else. I think he’s massively overrated.
Is that Kramer?
Everybody must get stoned.
Larry David at the end. LMAO and stuff.
I am glad to see the original after i remember Jim Carey in the movie. It was funny then and better now.
