The shorthand way to figure out if something counts as a fruit or not is to ask "does the plant benefit from vertibrates eating it?" If the answer is yes, it's a fruit. Apples and bananas are made for vertibrates to eat and spread the seeds (that's why seeds don't digest- it's a symbiotic realtionship. The plants don't just keep us alive for free, you know.) Tomatoes are fruits.
