Yuppie Rap is the classic music video from 1989 that parodies the "have-it-all" lifestyle. Mike Saad wrote the lyrics and I wrote the music and played the lead character. The video played on several music video shows including Night Flight which was a show that respected the art of music videos rather than the junky promotional tools they became for bands.
We shot Yuppie Rap in and around the Santa Monica Beach where Mike and I resided. Mike played the "Kamikaze Sushi guy" and various friends filled in the other roles. The ending was an add-on where the yuppie wakes up in a kitchen and sees all the characters from the dream. Mike is doing the precision cutting.
There was record company interest but they didn't know what to do with a parody song. MTV never aired it because it didn't come from a trusty record label. Idiots... Look at them now.
While we may not call them yuppies anymore, the materialistic scumbag will always be around and the video seems to still connect with younger fans who yearn for nostalgia
