The whole bill needed revision. If you want to define gay couples as a "civil union" with all encompassing rights equal to marriage, sworn in by a judge and constituting a family, awesome because that is what's fair. Call it a "super happy coupling" for all I care. But "marriage" is a term sacred to many organized religions and is an institution of religion, acknowledged and defined by the state. Civil unions need separate legislation, defining limits and exclusions surrounding any sacred ceremonial aspects affiliated with organized religions. Prop 8 did not achieve this. It's illegal to burn the American flag, because that symbolism is an affront to our nation and what we stand for. Marrying gays in churches or temples with priests, rabbis, what have you, is an affront to organized religion in the same respect. You wouldn't like it if Hilter youth groups conducted Bar Mitzvahs, no more than Christians want men in wedding dresses running down the aisles in a house of God. It's not right to slander religion to achieve fairness. Prop 8 was a broad stroke in an equitable direction, but not nearly definitive enough to support religious rights and freedoms.
