  • There are three people responsible for this tragedy, and Holly Petraeus is one of them. She was apparently in denial, having convinced herself that the attractive women around her husband were no match for her because she was an ace in the only arenas SHE considered important -- home, family, country, work with military families. She chose to ignore the fact that her husband has a different operating system. Men aren't designed by nature to be faithful. Most faithful men would rather be unfaithful but either have no choice or are too risk averse or lazy to take a chance. Holly's superstar husband had plenty of opportunity and at least one offer that he found tempting enough to accept. The fact that he'd been married to her for 37 years must have made Paula Broadwell all the more irresistible, since 37 years of sleeping with the same woman can take the sizzle out of any man, even if she's appetizing, and Holly Petraeus looks like the grandmother of the pretty girl he married. Marriage is work, and part of that work is keeping yourself attractive enough to keep your husband interested, AND fend off the competition. Unless he's so unappealing that no sober, sighted woman would find him attractive, you can't afford to go to seed. Petraeus might have succumbed even if his wife had done her best to stay attractive, but the frump she allowed herself to become didn't stand a chance. He was wrong, of course, but she greased the skids for his downfall.
