I like your caption about BP's cookbook. Very funny!
I saw in your profile that you have an idea for a sitcom. DO NOT send it to a studio or network unsolicited. Chances are they will 'borrow' your concept, tweak some changes, and call it their own. Get your idea on paper, along with a title and a rough draft of a pilot episode. Get an attorney to find out what to do as far as copyright vs. trademark.
From there you would need to find a trustworthy agent to arrange a meeting with a studio or network. I am no expert on this, but it seems the logical route to take.

I also have an idea for an invention that would radicalize our dependence on fossil fuels and reduce the need for nuclear plants - but like you I am stuck with the idea and not sure what to do next. Taking my own advice, I should make detailed drawings, build a mock-up scale model, see an attorney for patent vs. copyright pursuance, then get together some people I trust to launch a business plan and solicit contributors.

The key to it all is knowing who to trust and making contacts with influential people.
