Specksbacon I have no problem with people who vote Republican, I don’t agree with them but know many Repubs I’m friends with. I do however have a problem with the Republican party and the criminals who lied us into war, destroyed our economy, drove up gas prices and bungled Katrina. If you look at the piece there’s nothing untrue other than the opinions at the end that Repubs live like they’re in Top Gun. That’s a joke in most cases.

Adam, I consider myself a moderate, and will likely vote for Obama in the next election. However, I feel that this is the type of propaganda that both sides tend to throw around without any evidence to back things up. First off, the primary cause of the current economic downturn is the failing of the housing market, which follows a periodic cycle of inflate and deflate. (See other housing market crises in the 70s and 80s). Also, according to the Federal Reserve, the current downturn is no worse than the one under Carter. If you can tell me how the current administration drove gas prices in the Netherlands up to 6.48 in USD, then I will concede that point as well. I respect your opinion and think you are a genius filmmaker, but when you say things like that, at least be able to back them up. Here is my source for gas prices. http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/

mrfhrnht- thanks for your comments. It’s very easy to say things just go in “cycles” but the truth is this housing market crisis was caused by the dismantling of banking and corporate regulations. Also, the Bush administration had ample warning that it was coming and dismissed those warnings publicly. Run a search on housing crisis warnings and you’ll see several speeches from Bush’s’ former head of HUD saying as much. And gas has always been three times what it costs here in Europe because we are the number one buyers of oil and are the country that protects Saudi Arabia. How do you explain the Iraq war where no one disputes we were lied to by Cheney and Bush as a way to start the war. Or the negligence that followed Katrina or the dismantling of our Constitutional rights? Or outing a CIA spy? Or losing 9 Billion dollars in Iraq? Or selling nuclear reactors to Saudi Arabia? etc. etc. etc. If you say you’re a moderate in the face of this administration then you are just not paying attention or only watching TV news.

It’s funny because it’s true.

I’m so glad that John McCain, who is on his second wife, is leading the party of family values.

As opposed to those pinko-jew-liberal-commie bastards like Obama and Clinton who hate America because they’re still married to their original spouses.

Adam, please give me an example of the banking regulations that were “dismantled” that caused this crisis. When I said that the housing market moves in cycles, I should have been more clear. The inflation in prices goes back to Alan Greenspan’s plan to pump capital into the markets with low interest rates. When that happened, many people began speculating in the housing market because they saw it as a surefire way to make money, because generally speaking, it is. Speculation, not deregulation, was the major cause. Consult the Wall Street Journal and you will see that a large majority of the people buying houses were speculators that were not living in these houses. The credit crunch was a major cause of the catastrophic fall. The market would have recovered as it usually does if banks would not have been so restrictive in lending after the danger was known. Yes, low interest rates were a cause, but those are controlled by the fed, not the president. In fact, the fed is well insulated from the president because it should be apolitical. Whether or not the president makes an impact on the economy is debatable (this depends on whom you believe: John Maynard Keynes or Milton Friedman). Furthermore, any action through taxing (the tax cuts were a stupid and likely ineffective measure before you say anything) must be approved by congress. Second, the price of gasoline is related to the price of crude oil and government regulation. The price of crude is an international price set by OPEC’s production habits, not discriminatory pricing. If anything, look at OPEC’s track record with the U.S. and you will see that they are anything but accomodating to our market. Cartel pricing, which is was OPEC is, does not allow the Saudis to accomodate us. So that leaves government regulation, which has kept oil prices much lower than the european average. Simply put, things could be much worse. Which constitutional rights have been “dismantled” read the patriot act more closely. Really read it. Dont just repeat what talking heads have said. Nothing can be done without a court order. Just like before. All that has changed is the process for that approval has been streamlined. Many of the most contentious pieces have already been declared unconstitutional. The system worked. No one disputes we were lied to? thats a pretty broad statement. If you knew anything about intelligence gathering and how unreliable it is (especially since the U.S. is terrible at it) you would know that it is easy to be misled. I am not being apologetic for the war. It was dumb for us to go in even if we did have accurate intel. And I have more at stake than most. The Administration has made mistakes. But all do. (see Somalia and Bosnia as examples of a Democratic president playing policeman) My problem is not that you pointed the mistakes out, it is that you make unverified claims in your comment. Ultimately, it is insulting that you make the assertion that I am somehow uninformed or apathetic because I take the time to actually investigate my claims and back them up with economic theory. I am sure you can see I am not the typical commenter, throwing insults around because someone disagrees with me. I agree they made mistakes (and I dont intend to see another Republican in office), but you simply repeat what you have heard. Look deeper sometimes.

Hey Adam…I was reading the posts and just had to comment. When you say, lied us into this war, do you mean that the attacks in New York on 9/11 never happened? Did the towers not fall? Did people not die because of a terrorist plot to attack the USA?

Hmm, yeah. Lied us into this war. That makes sense.

And when handed Osama Bin Laden on a silver platter, did Madeleine Albright and Bill Clinton decide not to go after him? Yeah.

I guess you are smarter than the rest of us. You should take your camera and go find him. You probably could…and while you’re there, maybe you could also try to negotiate with the terrorists…you know before they decide to cut your head off and video tape it and release that tape on YouTube.

I don’t know…it could work.

Good Luck!

ptaylor1278, once again, I appreciate your comments… Love open debate… It’s very healthy. But you do know that Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11 right? Even Bush, after we were already at war, admitted as much.

Hey Adam,

totally agree about debate!

The war was waged on Terrorism. Who was funding the acts, but Iraq?! Even people who say there was no connection between Hussein and Bin Laden can’t convince me that the two were not linked.

So what better way to combat a terror cell than by going after the people funding it? It’s a simple case of “follow the money.”

And after we captured Hussein, the rest of the world was put on notice. That’s the true meaning of “Mission Accomplished!”

Saudi Arabia is the chief finanacier of terorism. There was no Al Queda in Iraq until we invaded. Check it out… No connection. It’s hard to believe but it’s 100% true.

mrfrnht Read any of a hundred articles about how the head of HUD who was appointed by Bush because he was his old neighbor ignored signs of the impending housing crisis: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/04/12/ST2008041202580.html As for oil prices not having anything to do with the President… or the economy… I think you’re working a bit hard to excuse Bush. He is family friends with the House of Saud. Exxon is one of the biggest backers of the Republican Party. Bush himself is a former oil man. Prices have gone up 300% since he took office. Really? You don’t think there’s a relationship? I suppose Bush takes no blame for our country using torture? Or for the fact that they were warned about Bin Laden but did nothing. Or he has no part in getting all the major phone companies to wire tap private citizens with no warrant. The list goes on and on… I know it’s easier to believe that it’s all just “politics as usual” but it’s not.
