Here we go, Jim. You hit on quite a few crucial points… Once you have a child, it aint about you anymore,(seems to go for parrots as well). You do everything you can to give that innocent and dependent being a chance to feel secure and loved-and to strive to have as intact of a home as one can safely have…Mentoring helps immensely.

It’s total bullshit that they can’t afford to provide more nutritional meals and beverages for the kids. It’s all about convenience and kickbacks. My friend is an English teacher at one of the worst middle schools in Detroit. I can’t begin to tell you what she absorbs on a daily basis from these kids. It’s killing her soul. We do what we can. It never ends.

first off…i was the last boy in my class to know what a stripper was, and that was when i was 10 (and the humiliation of that moment still stings me). i have a lot of really intense views on this because of my personal experiences with homeless, foster care, and other issues that go hand in hand with my fascination for the grimy underbelly of life. i’m not going to get into that now because what really important in getting people involved, because that the only way to start with a problem like this. bringing humans together is the best way to find a reasonable solution. kudos to you, jim, for taking a leap.

I wish I could donate but, right now, that is not an option. I have my own child to pay for and not much left after that!

’ hug a soul’ . . . tear. Wow you opened my eyes to make me feel grateful for all the things my parents have done for me. They could’ve gotten an abortion because hey had me so young but they didnt. I shall now go hug them and cry. Thank you. GReat bLog Too!

What stood out to me also is hugs. Hugs are love, pure and simple, transcending barriers of language, race, religion, income and education. Physical contact is healing and a simple way that everyone can show love and affection. Sadly some of these kids don’t know what a “good touch” is, so always remember to ask first if it’s okay. Thanks, Jim, for your service.

Yeah, pretty much. I mean, our society always focuses on poverty in other countries, but ours is going down the shitter too. I’ve been to the slums in Jamaica, and it isn’t pretty. But neither is the inner city where I grew up before we moved. It’s just sad, and unfair.

There were no last names used. I live with what I said- I know Bridgeport well- are there exceptions? Yes. Are you one of them? Yes. So I’m sorry for that. But if you get one dime out of me writing this—or one kid gets betterr taken care of, isn’t that worth it? And you missed the whole hug thing.

And I know David and his brother are from a broken family. Do you dispute that?

As a seven year veteran of working with atypical children (children with special needs) I have developed a “wealth” of knowledge of each child’s difficulties and back rounds. Like you 7 years ago I was ignorant to the fact that children who have ADD, ADHD, or SED were indeed correctly labeled. I simply felt that it was a result of bad parenting. However as a single mother and educator I have come to realize this is false, fiction, untrue. There are real disabilities that affect the best of families, those with or without appropriate parenting styles, and by you making such an incorrect and ignorant comment shows your ignorance as well. I believe that each person in our camp-those who are prayer warriors, praise dancers, worship team members and more-have been divinely placed there by GOD; which you as a person that spent a total of 3 or 4 hours is disregarding. Also, as a certified teacher I feel that your comments about “drugging and giving BJ’s” was truly inappropriate.

Oh and you can get in BIG……trouble for using a child’s real name and I don’t know were you received your cultural and economic statistics from because some were incorrect.

I just always think to myself, what a pity that in the midst of all this suburbian abundance we don’t do more to help out organizations like the Nehemiah council
