What does it take to be a producer?

It depends on the kind of producing you want to do. There are a variety of different Producer positions. However, lets say you plan and organize your own little video shoot to post a comedy short on FOD. A friend of yours comes up to you and says, “Hey, I wrote this sketch, wanna help me shoot it?” You read it and say “Yeah, I love this and I think other people will too.” You assemble a small crew and the amount of actors needed for the sketch. You oversee the production making sure not too much money if any is spent. You find ways to cut corners and try to change the directors vision, to your own. In backing and organizing this shoot, you acted as Executive Producer, Producer and Line Producer.

In all sincerity as far as what it takes schipperke hit the nail on the head.

As far as who can be one? Anyone, it’s not hard. Being a successful one is what makes the difference.

Schipperke is right on. Ask questions and listen to what everyone says and be prepared to take some advice and file away the rest. Be flexible. Expect the unexpected and be ready to reevaluate and make changes. Keep learning about all different aspects of production as in post, new format technologies, design and aesthetics…

Get ready for talent and crew to have fits when things don’t go their way and listen and just tell them you are going to try to get them what they need as well as you can, and do it. Keep communication open. Let them vent becasue it can be frustrating. Be prepared to get blamed sometimes too. You make the big decisions so you take the heat when things get bumpy.

There are two kinds of producers/directors. Meanies and sweethearts. Both can work. You probably get the difference. Meanies give harsh orders and sweethearts are supportive in the hopes that you will be motivated to work hard.

I’m the sweetheart type. I say, I want to work with really talented people and if they can work for jerks, or someone nice, surely they will choose to work wiith someone like me. My job is to help all members of a production team to reach their potential and I try to nurture the people and process as much as possible.

Sounds like it’s a no-brainer to be positive and not negative, but frankly, I have seen just as many meanie power trippy people succeed as well.

And KEEP THE FOCUS. All the creatives have neato ideas and they know all the directions a project could go and all these opportunities for publicity…Gotta keep focused or you’ll run around in circles all the time.

Follow the money…financing projects is critical. Know any REALLY rich friends…Bill Gates, the Google guys, Warren buffet, larry Ellison, Michael Dell,trust fund babies, arab shieks would be GREAT friends to have.

Usted toma las decisiones grandes así que usted toma el calor cuando las cosas consiguen desiguales. Hay dos clases de producers/directors. Meanies y amores. Ambos pueden trabajar. Usted consigue probablemente la diferencia. Los meanies dan órdenes ásperas y los amores son de apoyo con la esperanza de que le motiven para trabajar difícilmente. Soy el tipo del amor. Digo, deseo trabajar con la gente realmente talentosa y si pueden trabajar para los tirones, o alguien agradable, ellos elegiré seguramente trabajar el wiith alguien como mí. Mi trabajo es ayudar a todos los miembros de un equipo de la producción a alcanzar su potencial e intento consolidar la gente y el proceso tanto como sea posible. Los sonidos como él son ningunos-brainer a ser positivos y no negativos, pero franco, he visto apenas a tanta gente trippy de la energía del meanie tener éxito también. Y GUARDE EL FOCO. Todos los creatives tienen ideas del neato y saben que todas las direcciones un proyecto podría ir y todas estas oportunidades para la publicidad… consiguió a la subsistencia enfocada o usted funcione alrededor en círculos toda la hora. – fijado

When it come down to it the producer’s job is to play connect the dots – this guy has a screenplay, this guy is a director, this guy has some cash to invent, this guy has equipment, this guy knows how to manage production, this guy can do sound, and so on and so forth. The producer works to bring all of these elements together to get a project rolling. The most valuable skill one needs to be a producer is to understand the power of networking, meaning make lots of friends within and outside the industry you want to produce projects within. Anybody who is willing to work hard enough can step up and take on the job of the producer!

at point park university, they have a degree in cinema in which you can concentrate in producing. It’s a pretty good gig.

Que interesante Dave. Me gusta su explanacion en espanol. Si, el mismo es bueno en ingles tambien, pero en espanol es mas divertido. Lo sieto para me espanol. Hablo ingles, y necessito un viaje a un pais que habla espanol y muchas practica… Mexico… Sur America… Ojala que si! ~LizzyQ
