What is this? What am I?
For those of you who go see live comedy, or perform live comedy, here is where you plug your favorite club, comedian, or yourself. Movie reviews, ride-sharing to comedy festivals, confessing comedy crushes—this is everything to every comedy fan. This is also a good place to discuss the crucial question: What is funny?
Alright, well, I’m just gunna go ahead and throw this out there: Kristen Wiig is the most attractive woman ever to grace the SNL stage. I’m still very upset that she got married. But I’m in therapy now, and the pills seem to be working, so… yeah. That’s my life’s greatest misery for you.
Well friends, with another holiday season fast approaching, we find ourselfs witnessing holiday cheer..especially at the malls! For all you comedians out there, try this: In every mall, you’ll find a general sitting place, (not the food court!) where the weary shoppers wait outside stores.. Have a friend with you, and state that you’ve lost your contact, and cant see without it! Then you and your friend get on your hands and knees, pretending to look for it..see how many holiday shoppers you can get on the ground!! I do this every year after happy hour at Chili’s of course..I had about 20 people on the ground looking, and the best part is my friend and I got up and eased off around the corner and waited to see how long it would take before they noticed we were gone! 10 min..no lie! They almost had the whole section blocked, and the looks from other shoppers…priceless!!! I gotta get a good video phone!! Happy Holidays!

My friend Colby and I have been doing comedy in Charlotte for a decade collectivly. We hope there are some people who’ve been to our live shows on this site, to watch us and the other really funny people. We do alot of improv over sketch simptly because we have a lot of respect for it and it’s such a rush to not have any idea what you’re doing, but you’re possitive that everything is going to be ok no matter what. Even if the building explodes all went acording to the plan…which didn’t exsist. We’re going into our third live show as a comedy duo. It’s awesome. All of our viral videos, our movie, and our live show was…improvised out of one very long conversation we had. I’m very proud. If anyone is in our area in Charlotte NC please let me know and come out to our live show. We hope that the comedy community in this area won’t let improv and sketch start to lag on the gains they’ve made in the last few years. It’s hard to get the town to notice it’s artists. They love us in Atlanta, and even though I may hear improvisers on local Charlotte radio who I love, I know that they’re not from Charlotte.
If you wear that shirt you could tell people you lost a liver and they’d get down on the floor just to get a better view

I cannot tell you precisley what is funny. I can say what is NOT funny to me. Stuff we didn’t already address in 4th grade: Dead things, racial things, things in blenders (unless they are drinks), and serious name calling. C’mon people. We can come up with better stuff than that. OK? We can DOEET! And peeps who think this is a peepshow. It is, kinda, but after the boob/Nena thing I have to digress.Sad commentary on wimmen. Is this a comedy barometer thing for FOD? I apologize if I misread you.
Monkeys doing people stuff is funny and always will be. With the 92631 channels on my dish, you’d think I could have at least one dedicated to primates mimicking humans. It doesn’t even need to be scripted. Just put a monkey in a fireman hat, give him a hose and allow him free reign over the city. Or maybe a reality show about a special police squad of monkeys on mopeds. I’d watch it.
I think, “Groomer has it” is the funniest thing to hit since - any reality series. It is SO “tongue in cheek” and some of the peeps are really hysterical. Drop everything on Sat nite and watch it on Animal Planet.
What is funny?,,,,the original post,,,,no doubt familiarity is funny….a comedian that can make you laugh just by looking at them….like Will Ferrell in The Wedding Crashers….Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are funny in this, and then Will shows up, as Chazz; and I remember the entire audience made a weird, silly sound, like we knew something funny this way comes. “mom, the MEATLOAF!” Familiar is funny. Johnny Carson proved it every nite….his opening monologue didn’t have to be funny, and it wasn’t 1/2 the time…but Johnny was…the character is funny. Familiar is comfy is funny…how strange that unfamiliar and uncomfy, and nervous, can bring a laugh as well, a nervous laugh but a laugh. Laughter is such a great human escape. Life is comedy.
This is a really good question… “What is funny?” From what I gather comedy (a.k.a. funniness) boils down to a seemingly simple formula; obviously, though, the formula is extremely difficult to execute as there are many variables (duh). I’ll try simplify the general “formula of comedy” as concisely as I can here: gross exaggeration of the absurd + confidence = funny. Now, I don’t really think that comedy can be justified as an exact science, so interpret that formula however you want. Luckily, there are plenty of books out there that explain comedy better than I ever could, so I suggest picking up one of those if you have the means. I’d recommend starting with “Comedy by the Numbers: The 169 Secrets of Humor and Popularity by Eric Hoffman and Gary Rudoren”... hit up amazon to find it.
I’ve found reading the phone book, the white pages, to be immensely helpful in discovering the ins and outs of various comedic stuff. That, and it’s a good way to find a person’s number if you know their name and they’re listed. As it turns out it’s a lot easier knowing their name than to look up their name based on the number. Looking up the number makes me sleepy after 700 pages. Or so. I wrote a profile blog here about reading the white pages, too.

But on a serious note (just kidding) I’m going to get that book. I recently re-read How the Great Comedy Writers Create Laughter by Larry Wilde, and Jerry Lewis’ book on filmaking, and need to started on Buster Keaton Remembered since Christmas… also a book on Second City that is great toilet reading.
