what's up with calling someone or a movie "gay"?
If you’re under 13 years old, I completely understand. your vernacular hasn’t really developed, nor have you been exposed to a dictionary often enough to increase your vocabulary beyond what is seemingly a childish insult.
Isn’t being gay either a choice or something you are born with? So by that logic, isn’t calling something “gay”, like saying “Hey, you like the color blue!” or “You have red hair…”?
I just find it horribly confusing when I read a comment that says “your movie is gay.” I didn’t know it could have a sexual preference, or maybe it’s just experimenting like in college.
Yea, I made it a habit a couple years ago to not say, “That’s gay,” anymore. Not because of anything you are saying (you’re kinda getting too deep with it, haha), but because I just didn’t like the way it sounded.

im pretty sure they are not reffering to sexual prefference or however you spell that fangled word. they are mearly replacing the word lame with the word gay. someone once said stuff gets old. have a wonderfull day.

Lame is a more appropriate word though. It’s not exactly denigrating someone’s sexual preference or lifestyle. I guess I shouldn’t have paid attention in grade school to how words have definitions…
Over time, the meanings of certain words can become very fluid. In the context that you’re speaking of, “gay” really does have nothing to do, technically, with sexual orientation….as was mentioned, it’s something lame, corny, or uncool. It’s not a matter of how appropriate a word is on a strictly dictionary-definition level. It’s similar, in a far less offensive way, to the words “cool” or “hot” having nothing to do with actual temperature in many instances.
Reminds of a Simpsons episode where the bully Nelson kisses Lisa. When the other delinquent boys find out, one of them says “That is so gay!” It’s childish, sure, but sometimes people don’t feel like saying the words “lame” or “sucks”, two other very popular terms among the Great Unwashed Public.
i have some gay friends, so i try to call something “fat” if i don’t like it, instead of gay. i don’t care about my fat friends.
Hey Gay also means free spirited I believe, I could look it up, but too lazy. As in the phrase “Happy and gay!” As Noun mentions above, some words often change meaning. Such as sucks as in “that sucks!” Wasn’t that originally short for “Sucks dick”? But has just come on to it’s own as just being plain old suck?
guess the etymology of saying “that’s gay”, and making gayness a derogatory that makes me confused. The colloquialisms can generally be traced to something, as the aforementioned sucking dick and how, at a time when oral sex was more taboo, a bad thing and comparable. Is being gay really that bad that it becomes metaphorical for “lame” or uncool?
sadly, yes. that’s why they still don’t get the full spectrum of human rights (i.e. the marriage issue). i do think that saying “that’s gay” is much less prevalent in the vernacular and also has become far less innocuos. but still, to most of this country, gay=bad or wrong and “different”.
My brother is like a total homo of christopher lowell proportions and I call stuff gay. Its a term that doesn’t necessarily mean homosexual but lame.

I’ve been trying to cut back on my use of “gay” and “retarded” for quite awhile but it’s tough. i mean there should totally be some sort of support group. something like Disparaging Remarks Anonymous”
Hi, my name is 5.6, and I haven’t called someone a ‘tard’ for three weeks.

You deserve a 5.7 for that then.
uhhh, not really, unless you think gay and/or retarded people are not deserving of the same respect. the two phrases (calling something “gay” and calling something “retarded” basically followed the same path…the only real difference being that retarded people have a physical/mental/emotional handicap that the phrase, “you’re retarded” implies the subject of the phrase shares, where-as, “you’re gay” is just barely a step above the n-word. supposedly offensive, but gets used all the time, and really only causes a big stir when someone who is clearly NOT the word uses the word in the presence of or directly at someone who IS the word. usually in public. but really, to say it’s a whole other issue, is just not clear thinking. no offense.
gay decribes and entire group of people that includes all races, and also the handicapped, so using a word like that in the negative is really implying that you (again this is the royal ‘you’) place that entire category of people in the negative column. i realize that we’ve all become desinsitized to it t this point, but the root remains in a negative, dare i say, evil, prejudiced place in our psyche.

i think the word gay is awesome. it can be used in many ways. like hey i saw your video and it was gay. or i saw this video of your mom and i think she is really gay becasuse of what the video contained in it and i cant stop watching it. look at that two totally different ways to use it. so dont be gay and diss the word gay or else you your self are gay.

Haha.
or you’re just smart enough to form words so you stick to anything monosyllabic…but this is a decent way to put it…for idiots.
