I saw the movie Uncounted tonight at a real, actual  movie theater in Trumbull, a sleepy Southwestern Connecticut, grey poupon  spreading township. This little independent movie that could, really fired my ass up! You should see it too - you could probably use a little political jet fuel yourself.

 As popcorn shoveling, soda sucking, candy popping, movie throngs hustled their way past me into crowded theaters just down the hall to see mainstream movies about: sex, violence, romance and fantasy. We were part of a capacity crowd that assembled in the theater. Actually,  a little group of us (4 in all) actually showed up, as if we gave a shit about those that went before us to give their blood, guts and sweat for the Banner of Stars.

What a fucking country. We are still the best country in the world, however this little noticed movie brings the viewer face to face with a ticking clock that slips closer and closer toward the very possibility of our extinction as a democracy. "Wake the fuck up people," this movie seems to scream at the top of it's bull horn infested lungs, shaking windows and cracking concrete foundations along the way, while wiping the smiles off the faces of small babes, future generations of voters, that are right now playing in your local  neighborhood playgrounds - just my imagination running away with me here.

The movie speaks to the "New Math of American Politics." David Earnhardt addresses the elections of 2004, 2000 and 2006, while painstakingly allowing the viewer to focus on our denied, lost and altered votes and voters.

Why is it, that here, in this movie theater, only four seats were filled, four seats occupied, with the opportunity to view one of the most important issues to face our country today, namely: voter fraud.

At one point during the movie, our great American political experience was referred to as - the world's largest burglar alarm - while referring to consistent, inconsistentencies surrounding exit polls and actual vote counts in three national elections in THIS country.

We can celebrate Ground Hog Day in this country. We can look to the north and wince a half-smile at our Canadian neighbors just over the lake as they toast Boxer Day. We can sport eye patches, silly, exotic, sometimes hauntingly sexual masks on October 31st - but we still haven't set a FULL day aside to create a national holiday for the purpose of voting. Election Day SHOULD be a National Holiday!!

Thanks for your blog and your kind words. I am unsure why we aren’t getting better attendance at our CT screenings. But rest assured we have at least had some success when I have travelled with the film in reaching people for theatrical screenings across the country. In the 20+ cities I have travelled to in the past two months, we have averaged 200-300 people at our screenings. And the reaction has been enthusiastic – people get pretty motivated to do something to try to protect our elections. So, it has been encouraging to see that people, like yourself and the organizers of the CT Film Fest, care enough to want to do something.

So again – thanks for taking the time to write – and for sharing it with me. It’s very encouraging to know when our message gets through!
