Hey Everybody On The Internet!

Calm down! It’s easy to get swept up in the back and forth of a comments section. We’ve all been there. Hell, I posted something dicky earlier. But I deleted it because I realized that the circular firing squad we’re creating helps nobody. Any working writer or actor knows what it’s like trying to hustle your way up the ladder. It’s late night rehearsals and too much money spent on props and more people on stage than in the audience. It’s shitty and hard and sometimes the only thing that gets you through your mind-numbing day job is coming to a website like this and seeing that it’s possible. That if you’ve got the talent and the dedication, you can make it happen for yourself.

And then something like this goes and happens. Nobody with any sense would think that this video, intentionally or unintentionally, is a rip off of The Basement’s video. The logistical and ethical implications are just too big to even consider seriously. What it is though, is similar. Very similar. Comically similar. It is therefore not unexpected that on a site for comedians, run by comedians, some snarky back and forth would occur. The question is, what if the situation was reversed? What if this video had come out two weeks ago, and The Basement’s had come out today? I know I’d be thinking, “Oh, what a rip off. We give this video the benefit of the doubt because Seth Morris, Eric Appel and FOD in general have a long track record of quality original work. They’re successful and doing what most of wish we were, i.e. making people laugh for a living. But it’s still a double standard, and that can be annoying for both sides. So people who are hating on this video without a legit reason, please, let it go. And people who work here, remember when you were us and try and be little a nicer.
