Michelle Wolf’s monologue at the 2018 White House Correspondents Dinner made a lot of people uncomfortable. Apparently, jokes that call out deplorable behavior and speak truth to power became inappropriate for this event sometime between last year’s and this year’s Dinner.
Thankfully, Wolf has many supporters who came to her defense in a variety of eloquent ways! Below are some of their best reactions. If you’ve found more, point us to ‘em in the comments!
To people leaping to defend Michelle Wolf, remember, the right wing doesn’t give a shit about what she said.— Adam McKay (@GhostPanther) April 30, 2018
It’s all about burning up time & focus so they can keep looting and ripping apart this country.
Dear "the media" - @michelleisawolf was FUNNY. Hire a juggler next year.— Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel) April 29, 2018
They call you liars. They call Mexicans rapists. They call Muslims murderers. They support white supremacists. But someone calls them out on what they do, & suddenly they’re heroes for not walking out. https://t.co/B9aT7moy2C— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) April 29, 2018
Please quote the exact line that intensely criticized her appearance. You’re a journalist. You should be doing this already. https://t.co/B9aT7moy2C— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) April 29, 2018
I asked @maggieNYT to quote the line where Michelle intensely criticized SHS’s appearance. She unfollowed me.— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) April 29, 2018
She has an extremely important job. Making vague statements that she herself cannot back up with facts/quotes isn’t helping.
Few people go to DC and accomplish what they set out to do while staying true to themselves. @michelleisawolf is one of those people.— Seth Meyers (@sethmeyers) April 29, 2018
why did Michelle Wolf have to go and spoil a perfectly nice evening for all these horrible people? Next year at Mar a Lago with Gutfeld! https://t.co/Ej9UjPNOWD— h. jon benjamin (@HJBenjamin) April 30, 2018
I know other people have mentioned this already, but in case you want to be mad at Michelle Wolf about talking about Sara H's eye make up, YOUR PRESIDENT REGULARLY HAS CALLED WOMEN PIGS, PIECES OF ASS, AND OBJECTIFIED HIS OWN DAUGHTER. Pick a lane.— Whitney Cummings (@WhitneyCummings) April 30, 2018
Why would Michelle Wolf tell mean jokes? Doesn’t she know the high bar of human dignity these people have set? pic.twitter.com/MgBI50EvNs— Dana Gould (@danagould) April 30, 2018
Maybe someone should have complimented Goebbels’ eyeliner.— Christine Nangle (@nanglish) April 29, 2018
Hi I’m the head writer of “The Break with Michelle Wolf.” Thanks for your interest but we are all staffed up right now. But please do watch weekly on Netflix starting May 27! @thebreaknetflix https://t.co/mJEzUGxuqA— Christine Nangle (@nanglish) April 29, 2018

Michelle Wolf did great. If it had been me, there wouldn't even have been jokes - just me pointing at each of them and saying, "Go fuck yourself."— Michael Ian Black (@michaelianblack) April 29, 2018
A lot of people are whining “what if a man made fun of a woman’s makeup” in relation to Michelle Wolf and it’s like, my dudes, you guys elected that man— Mike Drucker (@MikeDrucker) April 29, 2018
And screw the WHCA leadership for being such chickenshits. Michelle Wolf was entirely in line w the history of that event. And she was funny as hell, you revisionist, complicit lickspittles.— Andy Richter (@AndyRichter) April 30, 2018
oh the luxury of being offended by good jokes told by someone w/ no political power— Cameron Esposito (@cameronesposito) April 29, 2018
Instead of the daily idiocy spouted by a man looting the country from within the White House
Good on u @michelleisawolf F44F; F44F;
This is the moment when people are supposed to call out the madness, cruelty and corruption. Fuck the niceities. @michelleisawolf was brilliant and all her targets deserved it. We have a racist lying President and politicians who support him. No time to soft sell anything. https://t.co/0YiPC2dA9d— Judd Apatow (@JuddApatow) April 29, 2018
Wow @michelleisawolf just destroyed last night at the #WHCorrespondentsDinner , so funny and truths that establishment press or Trumpers wanted to hear. Everyone’s pissed off, which means she did a kickass job!— Tony (@TonyAtamanuik) April 29, 2018
Hey Media Establishment, @michelleisawolf never made fun of @SarahHuckabee ‘s looks, she complimented her smoky eye and then made fun of her substantively. But if you don’t turn this into a controversy, then you’d have to face her larger point of Press Profiteering off of DT!— Tony (@TonyAtamanuik) April 29, 2018
Ann Dowd is an incredibly talented actor who doesn't happen to look like a lot of women on TV. IF you think @michelleisawolf was comparing her face and body to Sarah Huckabee Sanders AND if you think that is AUTOMATICALLY an insult, you've got some work to do on being a human.— John Hodgman (@hodgman) April 30, 2018
Girl, @michelleisawolf I don’t think these Beyonce lyrics have ever applied to a person more than u right now— nicole byer (@nicolebyer) April 29, 2018
“You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation
Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper”
You slayed I was tee hee-ing and ha ha-ing at them JOKES
Last but not least: Kathy Griffin’s epic rant.
B) First, @michelleisawolf took no prisoners last night. She roasted Trump, Pence, White House staffers, the media, media personalities. Everyone is focused on Sanders but that was only 1 1/2 minutes of Michelle's act. She went after everyone...as it should be.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
D) A comic's job is to go over the line and then push the line and go over it again. Great comics aren't supposed to be safe or careful. That would mean we're not doing our job. By pushing the line we force people to think differently, to ask questions, and disrupt the status quo— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
F) Enough with holding everyone else but the President of the United States and his staff to higher standards. This does not mean i don't recognize that investigative journalists at the NYT and WAPO etc are doing their part to expose this administration..what I'm concerned about.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
H) Trump chooses not to attend the #WHCD - instead the White House said Sarah Sanders was attending in his place. She sat on the dais where the President usually sits. So of course she was going to get some of the toughest jokes, she was Trump's proxy.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
J) And no the apology for the Access Hollywood tape doesn't count because now Trump goes around telling people he doesn't think the voice is his per NYT. So cut the bullshit.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
L) By the way for the @Scaramucci @dmartosko's of the world please tell me why anyone should apologize when Trump has never apologized for lying for years about Obama's birthplace and then at a press conference took no responsibility for it and lied again.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
N) So journalists are willing to demand that a comic hired to roast people apologize but they aren't willing to demand that Trump or his staff apologize to people? Is that where we're at now? Can someone explain the difference to me?— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
P) Also @michelleisawolf never talked about Sanders' appearance, she was talking about her character. But anyone pearl clutching over her comments and demanding she apologize needs to demand that Trump apologize for calling women fat pigs, slobs, talking about their bodies— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
R) BS @dmartosko. Sarah was there on the dais as a proxy for the President. That’s how the White House billed It. Michelle couldn’t just focus on just Trump because he was too scared to show up. https://t.co/x76JdWjvDP— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 29, 2018
V) She went after CNN, hell she even went for the conservative holy grail...Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick! But all everyone is talking about is 1 1/2 minutes of her act involving Sarah Sanders. You think the GOP would be saavy enough to enjoy her other comments.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 30, 2018
X. But who am I kidding, even if @michelleisawolf's set was boring as oatmeal, as long as Trumpers were criticized in any way, they would find a way to hate it. They are humorless and never want to encounter criticism in any form.— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 30, 2018
Z. Just imagine when people around the world see the @WHCA dinner and see a comic making fun of the President...isn't that what we used to be about? Offering hope? Setting an example?— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) April 30, 2018
And as a bonus, honorary twitter comedian Neil deGrasse Tyson!
When did it become okay to be more offended by what someone with no power says than by what someone with power does?— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) April 29, 2018
