Something has been infecting Americans like wildfire, and it’s not the flu. It’s the misuse of the word “literally” in not just 1, but 2 ways. Example of misuse #1: “I literally drank 5 glasses of wine at Gino’s party.” Saying “literally” is unnecessary. No one is going to think you figuratively drank 5 glasses of wine unless you’re a mime. But then you really wouldn’t be a mime if you were saying this anyways. Example of misuse #2: “I literally died laughing.” If that were true you wouldn’t be alive to say it. It would be more accurate to say, “I figuratively died laughing.” But then you’d sound dorky and people would want you dead anyways.
