After nearly ten years away from his hometown, 34 year old aspiring comedian Mike Manero was looking forward to reconnecting with some old faces from high school. What he didn’t know was that he would like spending time with new faces more.
“I knew Mark and Amy had kids. But I didn’t realize how much having kids changed them. They are nothing like my friends Mark and Amy from high school,” said Manero. “It’s like they’re completely different people.”
Mark Houdt, a policeman, and Amy Houdt, a bank manager, were surprised as well. “He hasn’t changed a bit,” said Mark. “He still wears the same Bod brand body spray.”
According to Manero, conversation was awkward at dinner until Jackson, 9, pulled out a John Cena action figure. “We started talking about who we like and where the company (WWE) is going and that’s when I knew he was someone I could hang with.”
“I thought it was sweet that they were connecting,” said Amy. “But it made me sad at the same time.”
After dinner, Manero sat with the children in the living room watching Adventure Time while Mark and Amy quietly sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee.
“I’m more of an Arizona Iced Tea guy,” Manero said before he loudly burped, much to the delight of the children.
At 9:30, Mark and Amy sent the children to bed. At that point, Manero decided to leave.
Before Manero left, the Houdt’s hugged him one last time. “We wish him the best. It seems like we just grew apart.”
However, Manero sees it differently. “Oh, I’ll definitely be back soon. Jackson said I could borrow his copy of Pokemon Black.”
