STEUBENVILLE, OH (Chafed News) - Famed tennis player Serena Williams came under fire after she was quoted in an upcoming Rolling Stone article criticizing a sixteen-year-old rape victim from Steubenville, Ohio, suggesting the victim wasn’t a virgin and implied the victim shouldn’t have gotten drunk.
Williams issued a statement on her blog, saying in part: “My agent and PR people are telling me that what I said was very insensitive, so now I have to go through the headache of reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. But, in all honesty, I hope they don’t pick up the phone ‘cause that’s gonna be a really awkward conversation that I’d just like to avoid.” Williams added: “I know how to play tennis, but I don’t know much about anything else. I honestly don’t know if that sixteen-year-old girl deserved to get raped by those football players or not. Seriously, I’m not all that bright.”
Serena Williams, 31, is expected to play in the Wimbledon Championships in England later this year.
