I contend that in the new economy we all have to think and act different. Finding a new job or employer may be much like finding a mate. My advice always aim for higher than you may really deserve, and that way if you just happen to get lucky enough to land a good one your strategy would have served you well.
Rules of the road always be interested, but just don't seem desperate. That's always a sure sign that you won't get picked. For those who live in LA, pretend your busy even when you're not, act as if you're super important even when you're not and they will be hounding at your doorsteps. Finally of course much like dating the best time to put your feelers out there for a new job is just before you quit your old job.
