During her segment on the lack of legal rights for women impregnated during rape, Samantha Bee periodically needs a break to pet animals for emotional support.

Yesterday on The Daily Show, Samantha Bee did a report covering just one of many horrifying realities rape victims face every day, which is that a woman does not have the right across America to terminate her rapist’s parental rights. What this means, infuriatingly, is that in many states, a woman impregnated during rape must regularly face her rapist while arranging things like custody and visitation of their child.

Samantha Bee spoke with U.S. representative Debbie Wasserman Shultz and rape-victim advocate Shauna Prewitt to learn more about what the government isn’t doing to help women who desperately need its help. In between her upsetting interviews, Bee makes sure to pet fluffy animals and get herself some fresh air—anything to feel even slightly less horrendously awful—which we recommend you try, too, whenever you’re too upset with your government to think straight.
