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
TODAYS GIZZMO HAS BEEN IN USE SINCE THE MID 1800,S, THE PIC IS OF A MORE MODERN VERSION THAT IS STILL IN USE TODAY. THE TWO DOWELS ARE 18 INCHES LONG AND FIT INTO THE HANDLE OF THE DEVICE. THE DOWELS THEN ATTACHED TO THE HANDLE TO HAVE MORE LEVERAGE TO USE THE TOOL. WAS AND STILL IS USED IN ONE INDUSTRY TO DO ONE THING...
WHAT IS IT ???
