After SportsCenter reported that the New York Jets released Tim Tebow, Jason Collins knew he had to come out.

Jason Collins turned on his television Monday morning and knew it was time. SportsCenter had just broken the news that the New York Jets released Tim Tebow and there was no telling when their latest bout of Tebowmania would end. Moments later Collins sent a text message to SportsCenter: "I'M GAY!!!!!!!!!!" the message read. SportsCenter reported that Collins was feeling "gay that Tebow was released". Collins clarified his text, proclaiming: “I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay. And I don't want to watch SportsCenter discuss Tim Tebow any longer.” Collins had thought about coming out before, most notably after Tebow threw a game winning touchdown pass in overtime of the 2012 playoffs. "I was about to call in to SportsCenter right then, but my phone was running real low on juice," Collins explained. When asked if he is at peace with his decision to come out, Collins stated that he is just happy he can "watch SportsCenter and not hear about Tebow every five seconds". While Collins is unsure how his decision to come out will impact the professional sporting landscape, he is certain that it will have a positive effect on SportsCenter. “I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport, I just couldn’t stand by and let Tim Tebow continue to monopolize SportsCenter,” he added. Collins is encouraging other closeted homosexual athletes to come out, saying, "My story will get some coverage for a couple of days, but after that it's back to Tebow. I need you guys to step up!"

Shortly after this piece was published, SportsNation released a poll asking "How much does Jason Collins coming out as gay affect where Tim Tebow will play next season?"
