I’m interviewing for a Shelter Manager position at a local nonprofit animal facility. I haven’t given up the dream of book publishing, but the economy there is no better than anywhere else and at some stage one has to keep the lights on.

It’s very little money but at least it looks like a playground to me- they have 25 dogs and over 100 cats as current residents.

I got to meet with the Director and a Board Member. The Director told me the Member was in HR at a well known beverage company.

The discussion goes well enough.

At one point the HR Board Member asks me “If you were a dog, what kind would you be?”

I guess being at an animal shelter I should have expected that, but I still thought it funny and pretty thought provoking.

After a moment of contemplation, I said “A Labrador mix.”

She asks me why and I said because “I have lots of energy, am trustworthy, and follow orders pretty well.” I toyed with adding I like to chase tennis balls into the water, but I thought that’d be overkill.

It occurred to me afterwards- if she was interviewing me at her normal job, would she ask “If you were a soda, what flavor would you be?” I wonder if I’d have to justify why diet or not.

So—I open it up to you—

If YOU were a dog, what breed would you be and why?
