CONGRATULATIONS TO GRIZZ FOR THE FIRST (AND ONLY) CORRECT ANSWER...
A FISH HOLDER.
DONT KNOW WHY THE EASIEST ONES SEEM TO BE THE HARDEST. IT WAS MADE IN THE 1890'S AND WAS USED TO GRAB A FISH TO BRING IT ON BOARD, TAKE OUT THE HOOK, AND TO SCALE AND CLEAN THE FISH.
TODAYS DEVICE IS REALLY COOL, WAS MADE IN THE 1840'S AND HAD ONE SPECIFIC USE THAT COULD BE USED IN A FEW DIFFERENT WAYS. THE CARRYING  BOX IS 6 BY 6 INCHES, AND SEVEN INCHES TALL. PUT TOGETHER IT WAS NEARLY 11 INCHES TALL. I COULDNT FIND ANYTHING ABOUT A PATENT...
IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL PICTURES TO GIVE A DECENT DESCRIPTION.
WHAT IS IT ???
