Remember Ernest P. Worrel? You know, that “Hey, Vern” guy played by Jim Varney??

Remember how he did all those Ernest movies in the 1980’s and 90’s? Movies like “Ernest goes to Camp”… “Ernest Goes to Jail”… and “Slam Dunk Ernest” co-starring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar…

Basically, he took that stupid Ernest character and made like a gazillion stupid movies about him. And even though the movies were produced for a boutique audience made up of mentally challenged and brain-damaged people, they somehow still raked in enough money to justify making even more Ernest movies…

Jim Varney isn’t with us anymore. He passed away a few years ago – I guess you could say, “Ernest went to Heaven” – but in his absence someone has stepped up to take his place. Someone has picked up his fallen reins to create a new series of retarded movies about an even more annoying character that wont go away. And that character is the old Southern matriarch known as Madea, played by Tyler Perry.

Quite simply, Madea is the new Ernest.

Tyler Perry first introduced Madea to American audiences in the 2005 film, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” And much like Ernest, Tyler Perry has used the success of that film to play Madea in at least seven other movies including “Madea’s Family Reunion”, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”, and “Meet the Browns”.

He even used the same title of an Ernest movie with 2009’s “Madea Goes to Jail” – although I think that movie was less about mistaken identities, and has more to do with a racist legal system. But to be honest, I’m not sure because I’ve never seen an “Ernest” or “Madea” movie.
