John Oliver is back from a two-week hiatus and with him comes a breakdown of the limits of the public-defense system in this glorious US of A. Turns out, if you can believe it, that our country isn’t great at providing those unable to pay for a lawyer to represent them with free lawyers to represent them.
The system is so burdened some public-defense lawyers have an average of seven minutes to tackle a case. That’s like an extra complex Rubix Cube that is not only difficult but has lasting real-world effects.
Check out this segment and watch till the end where Oliver rewrites the famous Miranda Rights speech to make it a bit more accurate.
