Let’s face it, who doesn’t love macarons? Millions of people have been charmed and enamored by these dainty little desserts. It’s a trend that keeps coming back, so we’ve decided to let you in on a few fun facts about it these coveted cookies. First, let’s start with a little bit of history. The macaron’s origins can be traced back as early as the 1700s, but it wasn’t until the 1830s that macarons were served in twos with filling inside. They have been a Parisian staple for decades, and many can be seen enjoying these wonderful sweets with their cafe au lait. Many bake shops and coffee houses have started making them in the United States, so it’s not surprising that it’s become the latest dessert obsession.

These dainty sweets make the perfect gift! Macaron or Macaroon? There has been great debate about this and we’ve finally settled it. Though both of these words describe a certain type of cookie, there is a major difference between them. Macarons contain three simple ingredients. They are accompanied by the filling, which consists usually of a ganache or jam. Macaroons, which are well known in the southern part of the United States and are also made Kosher for Passover, contain coconut or nuts, and are sometimes dipped in chocolate. Macarons feature a finer texture, while macaroons are heavier, denser little domes. What makes it a good macaron? Of course, there are many opinions about this–some like it soft, and some like it a bit crunchier. For me, the perfect macaron is one of balance. It should have a smooth crust, with a rich filling that is proportionally balanced to the thickness of the two cookies holding it together. It should break apart slowly as you continue to eat it, with a distinguished difference between the cookies and the filling, as the flavor hits your tongue. Do macarons make a great gift? If you ask anyone with the last name Ladurée or Hermé (two of the most well known French macaron makers whose family has been in the business for generations), they would say that the macaron is an excellent gift because it is a timeless piece of luxury. They are very beautiful in appearance and would delight any recipient, especially those who love sweets or have a fondness for pretty things. A perfect pairing with tea or coffee, they would make a great hostess gift, a gift for tea or coffee lovers, and even a bridal shower gift.
