AyurvedicTreatment Methods for HypoThyroidism
Hashimotothyroiditis is an auto immune disease in which the body’s immunesystem works against its own tissues. This leads to hypothyroidismwhere the thyroid gland does not secrete enough hormones needed forthe body.
Thiscan lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in whichthe thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body'sneeds. There is also gradual loss of thyroid function which isaccompanied by enlarged thyroid gland, which is also known as goitre. This is commonly seen in women aged between 30-50yrs of age.Butrarely in men.The exact cause is unknown. It may be also caused due togenetics.
FUNCTIONSOF THYROID GLAND:-
Thethyroid gland produces hormones that controls and regulates propermetabolism.
Italso regulates body temperature, Controls heart rate.
HORMONESPRODUCED BY THE THYROID GLAND.
Thehormones secreted by thyroid gland are thyroxine(T4)andtriiodothyronine(T3) which play an important role in the abovefunctions.
Thesetwo hormones are controlled by the pituitary gland, which producesthyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)and the hypothalamus which producesthyrotrpin releasing hormone(TRH).
TSHregulates the synthesis of T3 and T4.And TRH regulates the synthesis of TSH.
Inhashimoto’s thyroiditis ,a large amount of damaged immune cellsattack the thyroid gland. These immune cells are called lymphocytes.Hence it is also called chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.Thelymphocytes which enter the gland destroy the cells, tissues and bloodvessels in the gland. This destruction happens very slowly.Hencepeople with hashimoto thyroiditis stay symptomless for many years.Inextreme cases the thyroid gets enlarged and inflammed due to theimmune cells so that it becomes an enlarged mass in the neck calledgoiter.
Initiallythe person with hashimoto,s thyroiditis will have hyperthyroidismcalled hashitoxicosis(with excess thyroid hormone) .This is becausethe thyroid hormone, leaks out of the damaged gland as it isdestroyed and gradually, they become hypothyroid.
Thesymptoms of hashimoto’s thyroiditis resemble that ofhypothyroidism.Patients with mild hypothyroidism have no symptoms butthe condition worsens when the symptoms are related to slowing ofmetabolism.
