Jon Stewart didn't have any jokes to tell on last night's show following the attacks on the Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. So he just spoke to us, instead.

Last night’s The Daily Show was a tough one for Jon Stewart, who admitted he has a relatively easy job. He wakes up in the morning, reads the news, makes jokes about the news, makes a funny sound to accompany his jokes, and then heads back home with some money in his pocket. But yesterday was different, because after the shootings that took place in Charleston, South Carolina, Stewart wasn’t able to distance himself enough to make jokes.

In this clip, Stewart lays out his dubiety of the state of our nation and how we let events like this happen over and over again, while we continue to raise our fists and guns at international terrorists across seas. The media is “already using the nuanced language of lack of effort” in describing this tragedy, Stewart remarks. It’s a sad day when the people employed to bring light, clarity, and some humor are simply unable to do their job.
