Since the mid 80s, Dark Horse Comics has been known for original works (Sin City, Hellboy) as well as respected licensed works (Buffy, Star Wars). They took licensed material to a whole new level when they created a comic book based on a Nike commercial. In 1993, Dark Horse published GODZILLA VS BARKLEY, a one issue comic where Godzilla is attacking California and only Charles Barkley can stop him!
In the end, Charles Barkley beats Godzilla in a pick up game, leaves him in Utah to work on his hoops, and… something about a kid. I kind of lost track of the plot. But that might be because the original “story” is credited to Alan Smithee, the name writers and directors use when they don’t want to be associated with a project.
