IT WAS ALSO USED ON ABOUT ANY FIRBEROUS MATERIAL. YOU OPENED THE TOP AND FED THE RAW WOOL FROM THE BACK. THE BOX IS TO COLLECT SEEDS OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF CHAFF.
TODAYS DEVICE IS CIRCA 1870'S.  IT'S ABOUT 8 INCHES ACROSS AND IS ABOUT 4 INCHES TALL WITH THE HANDLES ADDING 3 1/2 INCHES TO EACH SIDE. THE POST IS ABOUT 10 INCHES TALL. WAS USED IN A COUPLE OF INDUSTRIES AND WAS VERY INGENEOUS FOR ITS TIME...
