Vans during the 70s and the 80s were particularly associated with one thing – getting high. Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a clear example of that, with the group of high school students having the time of their lives. One of the protagonists is the carefree surfer Jeff Spicolli, a habitual marijuana user. One of his favourite places to smoke is, of course, his vehicle known as the Smoke Van. This stoner ride can put to shame all other vans with its disco ball and plush seating.

9. The ‘Star Wars’ Light Speed Van, Fanboys

The indie road trip story offers a slightly different type of ride. The gang’s van is transformed into a Star Wars themed vehicle, as the group is off to Skywalker Ranch.

10. The Libyan Terrorist Van, Back to the Future

In one of the most intense scenes in the Back to the Future, we see Marty McFly being chased around a parking lot by Libyan terrorists in VW Station Wagon. Luckily for Marty, he manages to get back to the future. The faith of the terrorists and the van is however unclear.

11. Cheech and Chong’s Van, Up in Smoke

The cult stoner comedy about the two friends who are trying to make their way to the States as they are accidentally deported to Mexico has another memorable van at the centre of its plot. The main characters, Anthony and Pedro, unknowingly smuggle a vehicle entirely made out of “fiberweed”. As if this is not enough, the duo is chased by an overly zealous sergeant, who will do anything to stop them.

12. Kelso‘s Van , That 70’s Show

Since we’re talking about the 70’s, the van is a must. The show is focused on a group of teenage friends. During the course of the show one of them, Michael Kelso, purchases a van that becomes the main mode of transportation for the gang’s long distance journey including their trip to Vanstock. Throughout the series, Kelso has three cars - a 1965 Dodge A-100 van, a Volkswagen Samba Bus and an MG Midget.

13. Hippie Van, Texas Chain Saw Massacr

This is not exactly the kind of road trip with a van you want to have. The film follows a group of friends who are visiting an old homestead, but fall victim to a cannibal family.

Set up in Ireland, the Van is based on the novel with the same name. Larry, a baker who was laid off from his job, decides to buy a van and to start to sell fish and chips with his best mate. The movie shows how the relationship between the two friends changes in time.
