CONGRATULATIONS TO WESTCHESTERMIKE FOR THE FIRST CORRECT ANSWER... A CACTUS NEEDLE SHARPENER.  BACK IN THE DAYS OF THE "TURNTABLE" THE STYLUS WOULD WEAR DOWN AND DISTORT THE SOUND OF YOUR "RECORDS". THE COMPANY STYLUS WERE VERY EXPENSIVE, CLOSE TO 8 TO 10 DOLLARS. THAT TRANSLATES TO 40 OR 50 DOLLARS "TODAY". SO AS AN ALTERNATIVE YOU COULD BUY A BOX OF "BARREL CACTUS" NEEDLES FOR A COUPLE OF BUCKS. THIS LITTLE DEVICE "ALLOWED" YOU TO SHARPEN THESE NEEDLES AS THEY WORE OUT GIVING YOU BETTER SOUND.
YOU COULD BUY THEM AT THE RECORD STORE OR SOUND STORE.
TODAYS GIZZMO WAS DEVELOPED IN THE  MID 1700'S AND WAS USED TILL AROUND THE MID 1800'S, ITS ABOUT 7 INCHES LONG AND ONE DEFINATE USE...
WHAT IS IT ???
