PD 13 What an amazing day!
Hey FOD’ers, haven’t had the time to blog much but I have a little scoop for this day. Today is Friday the 13th, so watch out for black cats and don’t walk under ladders. Here in Podunkville there is another significant event associated with this infamous Friday – we call it PD 13.
This is the day when bikers from all over Ontario and the Northern US head for a little fishing village called Port Dover for a huge bike rally. Yes, the North Shore of Lake Erie (We call it the South Coast of Ontario) rocks for a weekend of partying and “bike-knobbing”.
I almost forgot about it until this morning, because as I drove to pick up my daughter at University, I was passed by multiple packs of motorbikes heading south. Coming home, every road and side-road I took was filled with bike upon bike upon bike. You must remember that this is November and snow can sometimes fly.
So I’m thinking, these dudes and dudettes must book this day off work weeks in advance. For days they hover around the Weather Channel broadcast, looking for a weather window that will suit polishing up the hog and hitting the road.
“Honey, I’m out to polish the chrome, you grab the leathers, it's a go!"
Today is sunny and clear with a temperature of 62’ F (11 C).
There are a whole variety of bikes here, from the choppers that have been highly modified (West Coast Chopper style), to three wheelers, trikes, crotch rockets and, I might add, the odd Electrified E-Bike chugging along. The riders are just as diverse from true bike gang members, mom and pop combos, retired old guys with their white beards and the young guns with their death-mobiles, fired-up and zipping by.
The entire town is in lockdown with a very heavy police presence. You must enter through a checkpoint and, of course, the know gangbangers are hassled to the “nth” degree. They even close the schools for the day to keep the little kiddies home.
My daughter and her girlfriends plan to go to a party there. Oh, my god! Well there are the beer tents and the concessions, the tattoo parlors and the roar of a zillion Harley’s. Oh, my, God #2! Hopefully they’ll stick to the House Party. But the girl she’s visiting has a last name of Haviparty. Oh, my, God #3!
The funniest thing I saw today occurred in a little hamlet called Boston. As we entered the village there was a huge sign proclaiming BIKER’S PITSTOP: BOSTON BAPTIST CHURCH. And, there it was, as we drove by, 30 or so bikers in the church parking lot receiving hot coffee and donuts compliments of the Pastor. Now that’s Holy Communion!
Anyway, if you are interested in seeing some of the action, check out these web links. This isn’t quite Sturgis, but if it keeps growing it could well outdo that one in spades.
HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13th FROM THE GREAT WHITE NORTH!
