In honor of Superman's 75th anniversary and the upcoming release of the new film Man of Steel, here's a look back at some key moments in the history of the iconic superhero.
1938 - Superman makes his first appearance in "Action Comics" #1.
1966 - Dean Cain is born.
1973 - Superman is teamed up with other superheroes including Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman in the animated TV series Super Friends, a show sometimes watched by a then 7-year-old Dean Cain.
1978-1983 - A bunch of Superman films are released, none of which feature Dean Cain.
1984 - A film adaptation of Supergirl is released, telling the story of Superman's cousin Kara Zor-el (aka Linda Lee Danvers) who hails from Krypton and possesses powers similar to those of Superman. Dean Cain graduates high school.
1987 - While attending Princeton University, Dean Cain begins dating actress Brooke Shields. The couple at one point consider going to see the newly-released Superman IV, but ultimately decide on Three Men and a Baby instead.
1988 - Dean Cain graduates from Princeton and signs as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills, where he wears a tight red and blue uniform and performs feats of strength and courage. (A knee injury later that year ends Cain's football career and dooms the Bills to losing four consecutive Super Bowls in the Cainless seasons to come.)
1993 - Superman cements himself as a true cultural phenomenon following the premiere of the seminal TV series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, starring Teri Hatcher and actor Dean Cain. Developed for television by Deborah Joy LeVine, this fresh, new take on the familiar Superman story focuses as much on the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane as on the crimefighting adventures of Clark's alter-go, Superman. A critical and commercial success, this romantic adventure-drama with a 90s twist featured guest appearances by such notable celebrities as Sonny Bono, Morgan Fairchild, Adam West, Richard Belzer, Denise Richards and Howie Mandel just to name a few. Truly the pinnacle of the Superman franchise, this sexy, will-they-won't-they adventure serial is as relevant now as it was when it premiered in 1993. 1997 - Superman dies*. He is killed by the evil ABC network when, despite respectable ratings for its timeslot, Lois and Clark is cancelled.
*Some claim that Superman actually died in the 1992 comic book storyline "The Death and Return of Superman"
1999 - The nation begins to heal as the TV show Ripley's Believe It Or Not! with host Dean Cain premieres on TBS.
2005 - Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is released on DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Lois-Clark-Adventures-Superman-Complete/dp/B00080ZG2O
2006 - Superman Returns who cares no Cain
2007 - Dean Cain makes a landmark cameo appearance as Dr. Curtis Knox in an episode of the TV series Smallville, an otherwise forgettable, joke of a show.
2013 - Dean Cain thinks about going to see that new Man Of Steel movie but instead decides to stay home and watch Three Men and a Baby on Netflix because why pay 12 bucks to see some fake-ass Superman wannabe in a movie theater when you can look in the mirror and see the real thing for free any time you want? Huh? WHY?
