CONGRATULATIONS TO AMYDESU (NEW GAL ON THE BLOCK) WITH THE FIRST CORRECT ANSWER... AN OIL BOTTLE CARRIER, OR THE FIRST "OIL CAN". BOTTLES OF OIL CAME IN HALF QUARTS, ONE QUART AND TWO QUART BOTTLES. MAINLY USED IN THE RAIROAD INDUSTRY AND MANUFACTURERS. A WORKMAN  WOULD TAKE THE BOTTLE HE NEEDED PUT IT THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX WITH THE NECK COMING OUT OF THE HOLE. SINCE THE BOTTLES WERE DIFFERENT HEIGHTS THEY WOULD PUT WIPE RAGS IN THE BOTTOM TO HOLD THE BOTTLE IN PLACE. SO NOW HE COULD USE IT AS AN OIL CAN  IS USED TODAY...
TODAYS THINGY IS AN EMPTY BOX, WAS USED IN A SPECIFIC INDUSTRY IN THE LATE 1800,S.
10 INCHES LONG AND 4 1/2 INCHES WIDE. IT LOOKS NEW BECAUSE SOME IDIOT CLEANED THE PATENA OFF. IT IS NOT A TOOL BOX, OR A SHOE BOX.... IT WAS FILLED ONLY  WHEN USED.

WHAT IS IT???
